All you need to know about calcium

Calcium is a mineral that the body is abundant with, which is needed to have strong bones and teeth.  Because of this, calcium is a very important nutrient that should be contained in prenatal vitamins.  Unborn babies draw on the nutrients that are stored in their mothers’ bodies and most pregnant moms rely not only on food but also on prenatal vitamins to get their daily requirement of calcium.  In making sure that their prenatal vitamins have the right amount of calcium, these mothers are ensuring the proper bone growth of their babies.  Pregnant or nursing women are required to take at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium everyday, whether through their diet or through taking prenatal vitamins containing the said mineral. Aside from strong bones and teeth, calcium, which is either found in food or prenatal vitamins, is also important for the contraction of muscles and for the expansion and contraction of blood vessels.  Calcium also helps in relaying messages to the central nervous system as well as for the hormone and enzyme secretions.  Because of this, it is very important for people to have the right amount of calcium not only in their bones and teeth but also in their body tissues and fluids as well.  The lack of calcium could very well impair the functioning of important body processes. 

Seeing the importance of calcium not only in the bone growth and development  but also in the function of body processes, it is but necessary that prenatal vitamins contain the right amount of the mineral.  Pregnant moms should see to it that the calcium contained in their prenatal vitamins could supplement what amount of calcium they may not get from their diet.  They can do this by taking prenatal vitamins along with calcium-rich foods.  Taking in calcium through prenatal vitamins could help them avoid bone density loss during pregnancy.   Aside from prenatal vitamins, a pregnant woman or anybody for that matter, can get great amounts of calcium through the regular intake of yogurt, milk and cheese.  There are other sources of calcium as well that could best be taken with prenatal vitamins and these are the broccoli, the Chinese cabbage and kale.  Of course, there are also various food products now that are enriched with calcium like cereals, fruit juices and even tofu.  So, if you are pregnant and you intend to take in the required amount of calcium daily, take on a healthy diet of food and prenatal vitamins that are rich in calcium.
