What to pay attention when buying Prenatal vitamins

The market is replete with brands of all types of prenatal vitamins.  This, at times, makes it hard for pregnant women to choose which prenatal vitamins is really best suited to their needs and those of the babies inside them.  Others who don’t want the hassle of choosing prenatal vitamins for themselves, rely on their doctors for this.  There are others though who like to explore their options when it comes to getting the best prenatal vitamins.

However, even if you rely on your doctor’s prescription for your prenatal vitamins, there are still things that you should pay attention to in buying prenatal vitamins.  One of the most important things that you should look out for in getting prenatal vitamins, as with any other drug, is the expiry date.  This could either be located on the bottom or the side of the box or bottles that contain your prenatal vitamins.  Remember that expired prenatal vitamins could do more harm than good for you and your baby.

Another thing to look out for in buying prenatal vitamins is the seal of the containers.  The seal of the containers of prenatal vitamins or any other drug, for that matter, should not have any perforations, to assure that it has not been tampered with.  If the seal of the container of your bought prenatal vitamins show signs of tampering, the efficacy of your prenatal vitamins might have already been compromised.  If you found that your prenatal vitamins are not in good condition upon opening its container, like they already have molds, then make sure to return them as soon as possible for replacement.  Never put your health and that of your baby on the line by taking prenatal vitamins that are dubious looking.

There are also other things to look out for in buying prenatal vitamins, especially if you are depending on your choice alone and not that of your doctor.  Aside from the usual precautions that you have to take, which are mentioned above, it is also important that you look into the percentages of the vitamins and minerals contained in the prenatal vitamins of your choice.  You have to know ensure that the percentages of the nutrients in your prenatal vitamins are according to the recommended percentages for pregnant women.  Make sure also that your prenatal vitamins have folic acid, calcium and iron nutrients that are essential for your baby’s growth and development and for your health.  Your prenatal vitamins should also contain Vitamins C, D, E and B12 as well as zinc, among others.
